A woman came to Buddha: her child had died. She screamed and cried. She was barren and could no longer have children, and her only child died - all her love and care. Buddha told her:
- I'll help you. But first you go to the city and bring some mustard seeds from a house where no one died.
And the woman went into the city and went from house to house. And everywhere she went, people said to her:
- We will give you as many mustard seeds as you like, but the condition will not be met. People died in our house.
And this happened again and again. But she kept hoping: “Maybe there are a few houses somewhere that don’t know death.” And she walked on and on, and so on all day.
And in the evening a great understanding came to her. Death is a part of life. It is the other side of life and happens all the time. Death is not a personal grief that only happened to her.
With this understanding she came to the Buddha. He asked:
- Well, where are the mustard seeds?
And she smiled quietly, sank to his feet and asked:
- I want to know That which never dies. I am not asking for my son to be returned to me because even if this happens, he will have to die again. Help me find that which never dies.
