Nan-In, a Japanese Zen master who lived during the Meiji era (1868–1912), once hosted a university professor who came to ask him about Zen.
Nan-In was pouring tea. Having poured the guest a full cup, he continued to pour further. The professor looked at the tea pouring over the edge and, finally, unable to bear it, exclaimed:
- It's full. No longer included!
“Like this cup,” answered Nan-In, “and you are filled with your opinions and judgments.” How can I show you Zen until you empty your cup?
