Ramana Maharishi lived in South India on Mount Arinahal. He was not very educated. At the age of seventeen, he went to the mountains in search of Truth and meditated there for several years, constantly asking himself the question: “Who am I?” When he found out, people flocked to him from everywhere. He was a very laconic, quiet man. People came to him to taste his silence, to simply sit in his presence. All those who came observed one truly miraculous phenomenon: every time he went out onto the veranda to people who wanted to sit with him in silence, the cow also came, always without the slightest delay, exactly on time. She was present until everyone left. And when Ramana returned to his room, the cow came to the window and looked inside to say goodbye to him. He stroked her muzzle, patted her neck and said:
- Well, that's it, go!
And she left.
This happened every day, without interruption, for four years in a row. People were very surprised by this:
- What kind of cow is this?
And then one day she didn’t come. Ramana said:
“She must have gotten into trouble.” I have to go look for her.
It was cold outside: strong gusts of wind and rain. People tried to hold him back, but he went and, indeed, found a cow not far from his house. Since the cow was no longer young, she slipped and fell into the ditch. Ramana came down to her and sat next to her. Tears appeared in the cow's eyes. She laid her head on his lap, he stroked her muzzle... He sat there until she died.
In memory of that cow, the Hindus built a temple at this place, with a statue of a cow inside.
