As the old men tell it, Osomatzinteuctli's domain was inhabited by natives of Cuahunahuac, and they supplied him with a large quantity of cotton, as well as a wide variety of fruits that grew there. None of these fruits reached Tenochtitlan, nor did the Mexica receive cotton, which is why they were in great poverty, only very few Mexicas dressed in cotton fabrics, while others wore only a loincloth made of Amoxitli reeds that grew in the water.
It was for this reason that Huitzilihuitl, the ruler of the Mexica, sent to ask the princess of Cuahunahuac to be his wife. He repeated several times: “How can we become relatives of Osomatzinteuctli, the lord of Cuahunahuac? Of course, only if we ask the ruler for his daughter for me!” His heart yearned only for Cuahunahuac, and for this reason he immediately sent elders to ask for the princess as his wife.
As they say, Osomacinteuctli was a wizard, a powerful sorcerer. He called together all the spiders, centipedes, snakes, bats and scorpions and ordered them to guard his young daughter Miahuachihuitl (and she was divinely beautiful) so that no one could appear where she was and dishonor her. The young girl was carefully locked up and well protected, for all kinds of wild beasts were guarding her at every door of the palace. Because of this, everyone was afraid, and no one came close to the palace. Lords from all regions (Valley of Mexico) wooed this beauty, Princess Miahuachihuitl, because they wanted their sons to marry her, but Osomatzinteuctli did not accept a single proposal...
One night, Yoalli (one of the forms of Tezcatlipoca) appeared before Huitzilihuitl in a dream and said to him: “We will enter Cuahunahuac, despite his people, we will go to the house of Osomatzinteuctli, and we will take his daughter, whose name is Miahuachihuitl.”
As soon as Huitzilihuitl awoke, he immediately sent envoys to Cuahunahuac to ask for the princess as his wife. When Osomatzinteuctli listened to the speech in which the Mexica asked for his daughter, he simply turned away from them and said: “What is Huitzilihuitl saying? What can he give her? Only what grows in water? And since he was seen wearing a loincloth made of reeds that grow in dirty water, will he dress her in the same way? What can he give her for food? Or maybe your area is such that it has everything: food, all kinds of fruits, necessary cotton and rich clothes? Go and tell all this to your lord Huitzilihuitl before you appear here again!”
Immediately after this, the ambassadors went to Huitzilihuitl and said that Osomatzinteuctli did not agree to give up his daughter. Huitzilihuitl was very saddened to learn that his request was refused. And again Ioalli appeared before him in a dream and said: “Do not despair, for I have come to tell you what you must do to take possession of Miahuachiutl. Make a dart and a net. With them you must go hunting, you will throw a dart into the house of Osomatzinteuctli, where his daughter is imprisoned, as if she were a beautiful reed. Carefully decorate your dart and color it well, and in the center place a precious stone, the most valuable stone of beautiful colors (chalchihuitl, or jade). You will go there to her home and there you will throw a dart with a precious stone. He will fall where Osomacinteuctli's daughter is imprisoned. And then we will master it.”
This is what Lord Huitzilihuitl did, going to the Cuahunahuac region. And immediately he threw a dart, well painted and well made, and inside it was a precious stone, as said before, playing with all the colors of the rainbow. He fell in the middle of the courtyard where the young girl Miahuachihuitl was imprisoned.
When the dart fell in the courtyard, young Miahuachihuitl noticed that it was rushing towards her from the sky. And as they say, she immediately took this dart into her hands, looked at it, was surprised and admired the many different colors: she had never seen anything like them before. Then she broke it in the middle and saw the amazing stone, which was already mentioned above, playing with all the colors of the rainbow. She took out the stone and asked herself if it was hard. The girl put it in her mouth, swallowed it, it slipped inside, and she could no longer vomit it back...
This is how the future ruler (of Tenochtitlan), Motecusoma Ilucaminatzin, was conceived.
