One man came to the desert monk. He asked him:

-What does this life of silence teach you?

The monk, who was drawing water from the well, answered his guest:

- Look at the bottom of this well. What do you see?

The man looked into the well.

“I don’t see anything,” he answered.

The monk stood motionless for some time, and then turned to the guest again:

- Look now! What do you see in the well?

The man looked and said:

“Now I see myself, my image in the water.”

The monk explained:

— When I threw the bucket, waves began to flow through the water. And now the water is calm. The result of silence is similar: a person finds himself.
