Chucklings

One day the Sami came to the seashore on little shoes. They wanted to cross the Salma to the island and hunt animals there.

On the old shore they had a vezha and a karbas.

They untied the deer from the cages, let them go to graze, and they themselves crossed the Salma to the island on a carbass.

We tied the carbass near the shore and walked around the island. We walked and hunted.

Their eldest was a sorcerer-dreamer. He saw in a dream that something strange had happened. “Have the chaklings untied our karbas? - he said to his comrades. “Let’s go to the shore.”

They came to the shore and saw that in fact there was no carbass. Then the elder says: “Everyone lie down on the shore, with your head towards the sea and lie quietly, be silent.”

The Sami lay quietly and calmly. Whether they slept long or short, they don’t know. Suddenly they felt as if the earth was shaking or the sea was agitated: a noise arose, as if many fish were beating the water with their tails. They look, a huge flock of pollock, as the raft stands under them. Then it seemed to them that they had fallen into the water. They look - and they are already at the hardened shore. It was pollock that transported them to the mainland.

The Sami went ashore. We came to the vezha to dry off. They lit a fire.

They boiled water in a cauldron. Suddenly someone knocked on the vezha door. “This chakling came to us,” said the elder. “You sit still, let him come in, and I’ll pour boiling water on him.”

The door was opened. A chakling, naked like all chaklings, began to enter the vezha, and at that time the elder one threw boiling water at him. He splashed and shouted: “I burned myself!” “I burned myself!” the chakling shouted and ran away.

The Sami began to fear that the chakling would return to them. They quickly got ready to leave. We harnessed reindeer to the saddles and drove into the tundra.

At that time there was frost and a snowstorm. The Sami were driving and driving, and suddenly through the snowstorm they heard the Chaklings running after them. They began to drive the deer. The Chaklings ran and ran after them, but they never caught up and fell behind. And since the chaklings were naked, they all froze in the tundra.
