Chagu Chatsba was returning home from a distant village. When it got dark, he turned to his aunt, who lived in a rickety paskha. He hadn't visited her for a long time.
The aunt was delighted to see her nephew. But what should I treat him with? She had a single hen with chicks. She killed the hen and gave him a treat.
After dinner, the aunt put the guest on a bunk against the wall. In the morning, when Chagu woke up, he felt that a cow was licking his feet. He was surprised:
- What a miracle!
But there was no miracle here: it turns out that when Chagu fell asleep and stretched out his legs, he ran into a wall of rotten rods and broke through it.
Chagu stood up and went out into the yard. And there the chickens, huddled together, squealed pitifully.
The unfortunate chickens mourned their poor mother:
“Let all our pedigs fall on the head of the one who left us without a mother.”
Here only the amazed Chagu understood the cow’s action: she wanted to draw his attention to the fact that for his sake his aunt had killed her only hen.
And for a long time the sad squeak of orphaned chickens remained in his ears.
