Sufi parable from Ghazali Al-Amash had a neighbor who kept showing him his house and saying: “Oh, if only you could come in and taste the bread and salt,” but al-Amash refused.
But one day al-Amash, being hungry, agreed. The neighbor told him: “Come with me.” He entered the house, and the owner placed bread and salt in front of him.
Then a beggar appeared, and the owner of the house said to him: “Your trouble is in you.” The beggar asked again, and he repeated: “Your trouble is in you.” When he asked for the third time, he shouted:
“Go away, or I swear I’ll drive you away with a stick.”
And al-Amash called the beggar and said:
- Go away, otherwise woe to you. I have not seen anyone who fulfills his oaths more accurately than he: for a long time he has been inviting me to bread and salt, and I swear by Allah, he has not added anything to them.
