A certain Abdullah Ibn Jafar owned a garden, and one day he went for a walk in it. When he passed by a vineyard he saw a black slave. The slave was squatting with a piece of bread in his hand, and a dog was sitting opposite him.
Abdullah noticed that the slave threw a piece of bread to the dog, and he ate it. Then he threw again and again. Abdullah asked:
— How much bread do they give you every day?
“That’s all I have,” answered the slave.
“And why,” asked Abdullah, “are you giving this to the dog?”
“Dogs are rare here,” the slave said, “this one came running from somewhere far away, and is obviously hungry.” So I decided to give the bread to her.
- But what will you eat today? - asked the generous Abdullah.
“I’ll be patient,” answered the slave.
And Abdullah Ibn Jafar thought: “I am famous in the area for my generosity, and yet this slave has surpassed me.” And Abdullah gave the vineyard to the slave, first returning his freedom.
