Quetzalcoatl - light, and Tezcatlipoca - darkness, looked down from the heavens where they live, and saw only water. A giant goddess (Sipaktli) swam in that water, devouring everything around with her many mouths.
The two gods saw that everything they had ever created was eaten by this monster. They knew they had to stop the monster; So they turned into two huge snakes and dived into the water. One of the gods grabbed the goddess's arms while the other grabbed her around her legs. They began to pull the goddess each in their own direction, and, before she could resist, they tore her apart.
Her head and shoulders became the earth, and her lower body became the sky.
The other gods, seeing what Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl had done, became angry with them and decided that, as compensation for the dismemberment, they would allow parts of her body to serve people as necessary conditions for survival. So from her hair they created trees, grass and flowers; from the eyes - caves, fountains and wells; from her mouth - rivers; from her nose - hills and valleys; and from her shoulders are mountains.
But the goddess still remained unhappy, and people could often hear her crying at night.
They knew that she cried because of her thirst for human blood, and that she would not give food from the soil until her thirst was quenched.
Therefore, they present her with human hearts as a gift.
So the one who ensures human existence, herself requires human lives for her existence.
That's how it was - that's how it always will be.
