Bayazid, one of the greatest Sufi Masters, came to the Teacher as a child. Without saying or asking anything, he would quietly sit down and look at his face, and after a while he would also quietly leave.
After 12 years, the Teacher spoke to him for the first time:
- My son, did you see the book on the shelf?
And he said what it was called. Bayazid replied:
“I’ve never looked around and I have no idea where the books are.” My only goal was to simply sit opposite you, look at your face and absorb your silent fortitude.
After these words, the Teacher said:
- My son, you are accepted!
Such an attitude towards a student applicant may seem too harsh and inhumane. But this tactic allows us to weed out those who are curious and not mature enough. The master will not ask: “Who are you? What is your goal? The curious person has no place in the world of religion. The whole world is at his disposal, but not the question of knowing the Truth.
