Balance

One day, two Zen masters met in a garden and decided to share their wisdom with each other. After they sat down, the first master told the following story:

“The day before yesterday I walked past the market and saw a man selling jewelry. He had gold on one side of the scale and cast iron on the other, and he balanced them. I looked at it and saw the balance of the universe.

The second master smiled and said:

— Balance is not a mixture of cast iron and gold or good and bad. Balance is the balance between what is inside and what is outside. So, three days ago I saw a monk meditating while looking at half a glass of water. And I remembered how, at the very beginning of the teaching, I realized that such a glass is half full, but at the same time half empty. And this is precisely the harmony and beauty of the world.

“I always thought that such a glass was too big,” said the first master.
