One Thursday, two Mayan Indians went into the forest. By noon they had no drinking water left, but there was still more than enough work to do. Since they were far from the village, they decided to look for water in a nearby cave.
The further they moved deeper into the cave, the darker it became around. So they walked in the dark, risking getting lost in the cave labyrinth. Suddenly one of them tripped over something hard and, bending down, felt for some incomprehensible object.
Having carefully felt it, the Indian suggested that it had legs and resembled a small man. Then they decided to put the object on the edge of the path and take it with them on the way back: after all, they were very curious to find out what it was that came across their feet.
Having collected water, the Indians returned to the place where they had left this strange object. But no matter how much they felt the ground around, they found nothing. “It turns out that this figure was alive, since it is no longer here,” thought one of them.
With such thoughts, they left the cave as quickly as possible and ran as fast as they could to the village.
...The next day one of them told about this strange incident to an expert on customs, ah-men, who, after listening, said with fear and respect:
- What you found in the cave was alush. You shouldn't go back to that place because something might happen to you. I think that you encountered him because his home is located there. Also, don't go there for water anymore, because you should know that the virgin waters of the cave are only used for ceremony. Don't you know that all places have their guardians?
The words of the ax-man filled the Mayan Indian with fear. And he never returned to that cave again in his life.
