The soothsayer Ba Yei was known as a great master of his craft. One day a man came to him and wanted to know what awaited him in the future.
Having made intricate passes above his head, Ba Yei said:
– Within fourteen to fifteen days you will lose a lot of blood from being hit by something iron.
The poor man believed in imminent disaster and began to count down the days with trepidation. When the fifteenth day passed and the prediction did not come true, the man perked up and began to vilify the soothsayer in every possible way:
– All Ba Yey’s predictions are empty chatter. He said that within fourteen to fifteen days something bad would happen to me. The appointed time has already expired, and as you can see, I am healthy and unharmed. He is an empty talker, not a soothsayer.
These swear words reached Ba Ei’s ears, and he thought, “I’ll hit this brute on the head once or twice. Otherwise, he’ll completely disgrace me.”
Ba Yei waylaid the offender on the street and hit him thoroughly with a saucepan.
“It turns out that the soothsayer was right,” said the victim, clutching the back of his head.
From that day on, the fame of the soothsayer increased even more than before.
