In one village there was a Hindu monastery. The monks from the monastery walked around every day with alms cups, collecting food for themselves.
One day, a monk, passing by, saw a zemindar (landowner) severely beating a poor man.
The holy man, who had a very kind heart, began to ask the zemindar to stop doing this. Zemindar, blinded by rage, immediately turned to the monk and poured out the poison of his anger on him. He beat him until he fell unconscious on the ground. Another person, seeing the state in which the monk was lying, went to the monastery and told what had happened. The brother monks ran to the place where the holy man lay. They picked him up, brought him to the monastery and put him to bed.
But the holy man remained unconscious for a long time. Grieving and lamenting, the brothers fanned his face, washed him, brought milk to his mouth and tried to bring him back to life. Gradually they brought him to consciousness.
The holy man opened his eyes and looked at his brothers. One of them asked in a loud voice:
- Sir, do you recognize the person who gives you milk?
And the saint answered in a weak voice:
“Brother, the one who beat me is the same one who gives me drink.”
