After my master's death, I became friends with Dudjom Rinpoche, one of the greatest masters of meditation, mysticism and yoga of our time. One day he and his wife were driving through France, admiring the picturesque views of the countryside along the way. They drove past a cemetery decorated with flowers and a freshly painted fence. Dudjom Rinpoche’s wife said, “Rinpoche, look how tidy and clean everything is in the West. Even the places where they bury corpses are immaculate. In the East, even the houses where people live are not so clean.” “Oh, yes,” he replied, “that’s true; this is a very civilized country. They have such wonderful homes for dead corpses. But haven’t you noticed what wonderful homes they have for living corpses?”
Whenever I remember this incident, I think about how empty and futile life can be when it is based on a false belief in duration and constancy.
