One man once came to the great Teacher Bahauddin, the founder of the Naqshbandi order, and asked for help in guiding him on the Path. Ba-hauddin unkindly replied that he would not help him and that the questioner should abandon spiritual studies and immediately leave the monastery. At that moment, a bird suddenly flew into the room and began to rush from wall to wall, not knowing how to get free. The Sufi waited until the bird sat down near the only open window in the hall, and then unexpectedly loudly clapped his hands. The frightened bird flew free. Then Bahauddin said:
“It seems that this sound was something of a shock for her, even an insult.” Perhaps I was wrong to treat the bird so harshly?
